Crimson Tide is a 1995 American submarine thriller film directed by Tony Scott, and produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer. The film stars Denzel Washington as Lt. Commander Hunter "Hunt" Wils, an officer of the United States Navy, and Gene Hackman as Lt. Colonel Frank Ramsey, the commanding officer of an American nuclear submarine. The film is set during a period of international tension caused by the collapse of the Soviet Union. When a group of Russian nationalists seize control of a nuclear missile silo in the Kamchatka Peninsula, the United States government orders an American submarine, the USS Alabama, to prepare for a possible nuclear war. During the film, the crew of the Alabama experience a number of challenges, including an equipment malfunction, a fire in one of the missile silos, and a mutiny led by one of the officers. Despite these challenges, the crew of the Alabama is able to successfully launch a nuclear missile, averting a nuclear war. While Crimson Tide is fiction, it is based on real events that occurred during the Cold War. In particular, the film was inspired by the real-life incident known as the "Typhoon of Nuclear Weapons", which occurred in November 1985. During the Typhoon of Nuclear Weapons, a Soviet submarine carrying nuclear missiles experienced an equipment malfunction and was forced to surface in the middle of a storm. The submarine was then spotted by a U.S. aircraft, which led to a two-week search for the submarine by the U.S. Navy. Although the Typhoon of Nuclear Weapons did not result in a nuclear war, it demonstrated the potential for such an event. In Crimson Tide, the crew of the Alabama is able to prevent a nuclear war, but only just. The film ends with a quote from President John F. Kennedy: "Mankind must put an end to war, or war will put an end to mankind." While Crimson Tide is a work of fiction, it is based on real events and highlights the dangers of nuclear war.
