James Forten was born a free black man in Philadelphia in 1766. He worked as a sailmaker and eventually owned his own sailmaking business. When the War of 1812 broke out, Forten enlisted in the United States Navy. He served with distinction and was eventually promoted to the rank of Petty Officer. After the war, Forten returned to his sailmaking business. He also became involved in the abolitionist movement. In 1817, he helped to founding the African Methodist Episcopal Church. He also helped to finance the publication of William Lloyd Garrison's abolitionist newspaper, The Liberator. Forten's work on behalf of the abolitionist cause made him a hero to many African Americans. He was also admired for his success as a businessman and his military service.
