When Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in 1968, his wife Coretta Scott King was left to raise their four children alone. She was only 38 years old. Over the next three decades, she became one of the most important civil rights leaders in the United States.
In 1970, Mrs. King founded the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change. The King Center is dedicated to advancing the legacy of Dr. King through nonviolence education, research and training; conflict resolution; and advocacy for human rights around the world.
In addition to her work with the King Center, Mrs. King was active in the Women’s Movement, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, the Poor People’s Campaign, and the Freedom Summer voter registration drive in Mississippi.
