When Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in 1968, his wife Coretta Scott King was left to raise their four children alone. She was only 38 years old. Over the next three decades, she became one of the most important civil rights leaders in the United States. In 1970, Mrs. King founded the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change. The King Center is dedicated to advancing the legacy of Dr. King through nonviolence education, research and training; conflict resolution; and advocacy for human rights around the world. In addition to her work with the King Center, Mrs. King was active in the Women’s Movement, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, the Poor People’s Campaign, and the Freedom Summer voter registration drive in Mississippi. In 1971, she helped found the National Committee for a New Politics, an organization that worked to build a third party to challenge the two major political parties. In 1986, Mrs. King led a successful campaign to make Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday a national holiday. The King holiday was first observed in 1986, and became a federal holiday in 2000. In her later years, Mrs. King continued to speak out on issues of social justice. In 2005, she joined forces with NAACP Chairman Julian Bond to oppose the confirmation of Judge John Roberts to the U.S. Supreme Court. Roberts had voted to weaken the Voting Rights Act, a key piece of legislation that had been championed by her husband. Mrs. King passed away in 2006 at the age of 78. Her funeral was attended by four living U.S. Presidents, as well as dignitaries from around the world. Coretta Scott King was an incredible woman who accomplished a great deal in her lifetime. She was a devoted wife and mother, and a tireless crusader for justice. Her work helped to make the world a better place for all people, regardless of race or gender.
