Did heidegger believe in god?

Heidegger is a difficult philosopher to pin down on the question of God, as his thinking on the matter is complex and often contradictory. On the one hand, Heidegger clearly states that "the God question is the most fateful question for humanity" and that it is only through grappling with this question that we can come to a true understanding of ourselves. On the other hand, he also says that the question of God is one that we must ultimately step beyond, as it is a question that is beyond our human understanding. So what are we to make of Heidegger's stance on the existence of God? It seems that he is both affirming and denying the possibility of God's existence at different points in his work. Ultimately, however, it seems that Heidegger does not believe in the traditional concept of God as an all-powerful, all-knowing being who oversees and controls the universe. Rather, for Heidegger, the question of God is a way of asking about the meaning and purpose of our existence. It is only through grappling with this question that we can come to a true understanding of ourselves and our place in the world.
