When René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, embarked on his journey down the Mississippi River in 1682, he had high hopes of finding a route to the Pacific Ocean. La Salle was an experienced explorer and had already made several trips to the New World. He was confident in his abilities and felt that he could achieve anything he set his mind to. Unfortunately, La Salle's expedition did not go as planned. The expedition became stranded in present-day Texas, and La Salle and his men were forced to winter in an area that was inhabited by hostile Native Americans.
