Released in 2004, the film adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ novel of the same name starred Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams as young lovers Noah and Allie, whose relationship is put to the test by the circumstances of their lives. The film was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $115 million at the box office on a budget of $29 million. In recent years, however, The Notebook has come under fire for its controversial ending. For those who haven’t seen the film, spoiler alert: Noah and Allie die in each other’s arms, having spent their final years together despite Allie’s Alzheimer’s disease. While this may seem like a tragic but ultimately romantic end for the couple, some viewers have taken issue with the fact that Allie seemingly forgets Noah entirely in the years leading up to her death. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, screenwriter Nick Cassavetes addressed the backlash, saying, “I’ve read a lot of people say that it would have been better if [Allie] died first, but I don’t look at it that way… I think it’s more tragic that she forgets him and she has to live with that for the rest of her life.” Whether you love or hate The Notebook’s ending, there’s no denying that it’s a polarizing issue.
