In 1978, in the town of Jonestown, Guyana, more than 900 people died in what has become known as the Jonestown Massacre. The majority of these deaths were the result of mass murder-suicide, with more than 700 people drinking a poisonous concoction of Flavor Aid and cyanide. Jones was the leader of the Peoples Temple, a religious cult that believed in a mix of Christianity, socialism, and communism. In November 1978, a group of Congressman and journalists came to Jonestown to investigate the cult. Jones saw this as a threat, and ordered his followers to kill the visitors. When some members of the cult refused, Jones had them killed as well. The Congressman and journalists were only the first victims of the Jonestown Massacre. Jones then ordered his followers to commit mass suicide, telling them that they were going to a better place and that the poison was just fruit punch. Over 700 people, including children, died. The Jonestown Massacre was a tragedy of epic proportions. The victims were misled and manipulated by a madman, and their deaths were a senseless waste. In the end, the only thing that they drank was poison.
